One community. Two continents. A centuries-long return

Aguda Returns: A Family Portrait uncovers the untold story of the Aguda People-formerly enslaved Africans (mostly of Yoruba descent) who returned from Brazil to Nigeria/West African communities between 1840s-1890s.

This project builds on the critical research done by the Nigerian-Brazilian History Project, with the aim to finish the task of tracing the return of formerly enslaved Yoruba people who returned to Lagos and the coast of West Africa, highlighting their role as skilled artisans, entrepreneurs, architects, and cultural leaders.

This Project is created by Aguda descendants in response to continued erasure of Aguda identity and Architecture.
