The Aguda Journey: Realities, Resilience and Renovation
The Aguda journey is rooted into the history of Atlantic slavery when millions of Yoruba people were removed from parts of West Africa, particularly the Oyo Empire and enslaved in Brazil in spite of the inhumane treatment these people faced on a daily basis they clung stead factly to their language, regions and cultural traditions which became their tools for survival.
In 1800 after the abolition of slavery, the returned to West Africa including Lagos bringing with them skills, spirituality and a sense of community. Aguda Returns aims to pay tribute to the returnees (referred as Aguda) who overcame religious differences, poverty, and marginalization by creating distinct cultural practices as a means to preserve of celebrating their ancestors through their language, clothing, food, and religion.
